‘Ahmadis should be issued a tv license’

By Omar Bah

A leading voice among the country’s religious leaders, Imam Baba Leigh of the Kanifing Mosque has said that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at should be granted a license to operate a Television station in the country.
Imam Leigh made this remark during his weekly sermon on Friday. The TV application of the Ahmadiyya Jama’at is strongly challenged by the Supreme Islamic Council generating a heated debate among Gambians in recent days.

But According to the outspoken Imam Leigh, “The Gambian constitution stipulates that the country is a secular state where anyone can follow the religion of one’s choice without infringing into somebody else’s religion or belief. Since this is the supreme law of the land talking like that, then the Ahmadis should be given a license,” Leigh said.

“How can you stop the Ahmadis from operating a television when we have BBC, CNN and the Internet? The internet is showing what the Television cannot show and all our children are having their Smartphones. Has that destroyed all of them? No. It may for some, but not all. Please let us leave these people alone,” he urged.
Imam Leigh further said as Muslims the first thing one should consider is the dictates of Islam. “And what Islam teaches us is that God will not use somebody’s bad or good deeds to pay it to another person and whatever one does one should face the consequence.

“And the Quran also teaches us that those who are doing that which is not good will not reduce anything from us Muslims; all we need to do is the right thing,” he said.
He continued: “This is a country where the Ahmadis have opened schools and hospitals and nobody complains about it, so why now?” he asked.

Imam Leigh said the argument that Ahmadis don’t pray in other Mosques or behind other Muslims is immaterial. “As an Imam those who concern me are those who pray behind me because those are the ones about whom I will be asked,” he said.

He added: “I listened to one preacher recently saying if the government fails to take any decision, they will take their own decision. To me if anyone takes a decision in that aspect you are a criminal and a Muslim should not be a criminal. Any decision one takes against somebody because of that person’s concept in religion or Islam will be a criminal.”

  1. I am Demba Jallow
After reading an article of your media house on the 12 December 2018, it was not supersize to me to that the known hypocrite Imams of KSMD, supporting the Ahmadiya’s request for a TV license.
it was a big disappointment for the Muslim Ummah to have a such Imam who’s references is always refer to man made laws even if its contradicting laws of Allah, because of popularity.

I think now it is time for Gambian Muslim Ummah to be able to identify from who are the taking their religion, an individual who claim to be an Imam infact you can even one sign that can indicate to you he is an Imam he support every think from the west because of the income that he is gaining from it.

even the Gambian constitution it stated that the majority is always in top line so if the muslim ummah are the majority in the Gambian population, how can you ignore their rights because of your personal interest.

in conclusion Gambians need Imams who can defend Allah’s religion not who are defending their intrest

    thanks

  2. Mr. Demba Jallow you are just as ignorant like the rest of them. It is people like you and Imam Fatty and those who supports the enemies of our dear country Gambia. You people need to know the Islam the Holy Prophet brought and taught us. If the Holy Prophet lived with all types of people belonging to different religions in peace who are you and Supreme Islamic Council Members to do otherwise. This only shows your intolerance and stupidity. Go to Senegal and see how many different religious set are there and yet they live alongside each other peacefully. We and and all descent Gambians will not allow you or Supreme Islamic Council Members to run our country for us.

  4. It is rather sad that we Muslims always hide behind the umbrella of secularism to justify things that are in contradiction with the norms or Islam. So sad that those we consider as role models in the religion are the very people who support such wrongs. Remember, this secular laws were designed for us by the kaffirs in the west and we being so gullible consumed every thing in them.

Be warned that EU and Americas are watching for the precedence we are going to set on this issue. I bet that once the license is issued, the gays will also rise up and demand for their rights and the EU and Americas will come to their aid by leveling conditions upon us to recognize their right in the country. Should we stand firm against such circumstances or do we yield to the terms of the so called secular status and the teachings of the constitution?

On another note, once the license is issued to them, what will we do when the Maurids, the Tijaniyas, the Christians, the Bahai’s, the Idol worshipers and all the other religions also apply to have their own TV station. Are we going to deny them their right? Imam Leigh is entirely wrong to claim that they built schools and hospitals in the country without anyone complaining. He is entirely off the mark.

Finally, once they have their TV station, what kind of programs are they going to show, only religious songs and what? We need TV stations that concentrate on developmental programs and social activities please.

I as a Muslim pray in different mosques with different beliefs because we all acknowledge the fact that the seal of the prophets was Muhammad Rasul Lul Lah. If Ghulam Ahmad is considered as a prophet, then definitely the Ahmadis are indeed out of the pale of Islam.

Let us Gambians stop hiding behind the dictates of secularism and democracy and so on and so forth. It is an obligation upon us to protect the religion of Islam for which reason our first point of call should be whether what is being propagated is in consonance with Islam.

anyone who knows deen will tell u there is no basis for his arguement other than peddling liberal views which we are all entilted2to without religious schooling.

  5. First of all I want to ask people where does this so called democracy came from? If only democracy, I believed Europe and America have stronger democracy than The Gambia because it come from them. Why the Europeans and Americans are not giving equal right to people when it comes to religious matters? This imam should not engage the government in any way of granting them the permit to carry on. He needs to come up with convincing reasons order the few he had mentioned. As an imam, you should no way compared man made law especially made by disbelievers to what Allah says. Thanks.

  6. My fellow Muslim brothers who are defending the Ahmadis, I think you forget something regarding the Ahmadis, that is they call themselves Muslims and yet their belief contradicts the Quran and the Sunnah we Muslim believed in. I would have support the notion for Christians be given license to operate their own TV station because Christianity is a religion of its own, like Judaism, Buddhism etc. Christian believe in Jesus Christ as whatever he is to them and other religious alike. So how can Ahmadis say they are Muslims and they don’t regard Muhammad PBUH as the last Messenger and seal of Prophet-hood. The only thing they can be considered in Islam is that they’re HYPOCRITES. To answer Musa Kijera who says Muhammad PBUH has live with all kind of religion, it may be true but he did not live with hypocrites he slay them. Ahmadis should be slain because they’re HYPOCRITES. If you are a Muslim, you must believe in the Quran and the Sunnah period otherwise you will be outside the Islamic creed.

According to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH we know from the following hadith from Bukhari:

“Whoever says “none has the right to be worshipped but Allah”, faces our Qiblah during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then HE IS A MUSLIM, and has the SAME RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS as other Muslims” (Bukhari)

Thus, according to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) AHMADIS ARE MUSLIMS. You have just gone against the teachings of Islam by stating that Ahmadis are not Muslims. Remember, as the Qur’an repeatedly reminds us that the previous people always mocked the prophets and persecuted their followers. This is what is happening today, where the servants of Muhammad (PBUH), namely the Ahmadis, are being persecuted.

What about those who dont believe in anything and they lived with the Holy Prophet…did he banish them? Are yoi better that Muhammad (pbuh) Shut your filty mouths. Am a muslim like you but you guys should stop your hatred. You dont represent anyones views. Dont we have christian talk shows on GRTS? Why are you not talking about that? If other faiths can practice their religion freely why not the Ahmadis. You guys should juat shut up.

  9. We are all Muslims regardless. Why can’t we be tolerant? If one is sick and need healing they will not be concerned if they are taken to an Ahmadia hospital or the doctor is Ahmadi. If their children are offered entrance to Nusrat and other Ahmadi schools they will not be concerned. Why are freaking TV. If you’re strong in your faith you will respect all other faiths. There is enough space for God you fools!
So now it is only us Muslims who can have TV stations in the country? What a joke. So the Christians can’t I guess. You will never hear a Catholic spew these kinds of disrespect to their fellow Anglican or Methodist brothers. Why can’t we be mature and respectful. Everyone his own grave. Sometime I feel we Muslims have inferiority complex when compared to other faiths. I’m sorry the truth hurts.

Assalamo Alaikum Muslim Brother! Christians are Christians because they say they. Jews are Jews because they say they are, and Sunnis are Muslims because they say they are. Just like that Ahmadis are Muslims because they say they are. You have no right to call enforce on someone that they are of such and such faith, for that amounts to shirk – equating partners with Allah (swt), for only Allah is the judge of who is who. So here’s an advice – please follow the teachings of Islam before misdirecting others.

  10. Please let’s debate with maturity. No insults, no castigation. Just give tangible reasons for or against the motion. My question is – once they get the license should all the other religions be allocated or denied a license? Should gays also be denied their right to openly exist? Remember we are talking about the constitution, secularism, democracy and freedom of anything. My take on this topic is that the Ahmadis can use the airtime given to Islamic and Christian believes on GRTS or buy airtime from QTV. The Gambia is too small for so many TV stations.

  11. A few questions for you who is defending Imam Fatty and the Supreme Islamic Council (SIC).
    1) Where was Imam Fatty and the Supreme Islamic Council when Yaya Jammeh was killing and torturing Gambians?
    2) Is killing and torturing (Repression of the innocent) Innocent Muslims not against Islam?
    3) Why did Imam Fatty and all members of SIC decided to associate themselves with Yaya Jammeh and his repressive regime?
    4) Is the Ahmadiyya Faith stronger than Sunni Islam? What makes you become scare of them?
    5) Does the Koran not say there is no COMPULSION in religion?
    6) Why are we allowing our children go to Ahmadiyya Schools if you fear of indoctrination of our youths?
    7) Why allow our wives, fathers, mothers etc visit their hospitals to be treated if you fear their indoctrination?
    8) If you do not have adequate answers to these questions, and I am sure you do not, please let all of us Gambians leave together in peace. That is what the Holy Koran preaches.

  13. These people are just clueless about religion! Allah clearly asked Muslims to engage unbelieves with knowledge and not force and hatred! Islam is already defended, so please stop spreading ignorance and arrogance. What is available on social media is enough! These uneducated imams like Ablie Fatty are just not informed and lacks intellectual reasoning. They contradicts Allah and the Quran and thinks they on the right path. Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) even once allowed the christian priest of Najrani to pray in his mosque and have a religious dialogue with hiscongregation! Who is Ablie Fatty to deny Ahmadiyyas a right to worship what ever they want? There is no conpulsion in religion (Quran, 2.256)!

  14. ‘There is no compulsion in religion’, the Holy Quran clearly states. When the idol worshippers of Mecca confronted the Holy Prophet (saw) Allah Almighty commanded him to say ‘lakum diinikum waliyadeen'( yours is your religion and mine is my religion, Sura al Kafiruun ).

Why are you judging each other ? when the census of Medina was conducted by the Holy Prophet (saw) anyone who said and accepted ‘Laa ilaaha ilallah Muhammadu rasulullah’ (there’s none worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is His messenger) was counted as a Muslim.

Where do all these modern definitions of a Muslim come from? You need to challenge these so called twisted and political ulama whose main agenda is to amass wealth and political status and by so doing have gone astray.

What’s wrong with Ahmadies getting tv licence? You support dajjal and hate your own brothers in faith? What kind of muslims are you? Didn’t the Holy Prophet ( saw) give his mosque for Christian guests to worship in?

Wake up Gambia!!! Stop these religious bigots and observe respect , tolerance and peaceful coexistence with each community.

Our forefathers didn’t fight slavery only to be enslaved by our own kind in the name of theological differences. God bless Africa!!!

  16. Imam Baba Leigh is right. Let this so called Islamic council give us a break! There is no such body in Islam, and our democracy has not yet created any act that gives any organistion such Powers you are claiming! You dont mix state and religion. If Ahmadiyyas are not Muslims, what does that have to do with anybody or any organisation? They are Citizens of The Gambia, and Allah says, there is no compulsion in deen. Know your deen and stop listening to these uneducated imams with no intellectual capital to contextualise ideologies and religion in there right context. they dont know how to deal with Ahmadiyyas, becuase they refused to do what Allah asked Muslims to do, which is to seek knowledge. Attaining those imam schools in Medina does not make one knowledgeable at all. They only train them to promote Saudi arrogance and no science at all.

Let them do what Allah told Muslims to do, and strenghtened the examples Prophet Muhammad (PBH) left us with to learn from. Let them excercise knowledge and provide their proves to the Ahmadiyyas and encourage them to abandon their blasphemy. But again, if you are schooled and not educated, you cant know the difference. No one has a right to judge who is Muslim or not. No one can defend Islam accept Allah. Go and read the Quran. Find out how the Prophet dealt with even unbelievers.

This so called Islamic council is just a bluff organisation set up by that criminal Jammeh with the help of its hypocrite members to supress and brutalise Gambians for the past 15-20 yrs! We know who they are and will not allow them to jeopardise the Peace and democracy Gambia is trying to build. They were part of those who helped Jammeh to destroy Gambia and Gambians. They are not educated but schooled so they know very little about the outer World. We can deal with Ahmadiyyas easily in an intelligent way, but because these uneducated fools lacks the intellectual capacity to that, they caan only resort to propagating violence and arrogance using their Saudi salafi methods to denounce anyone who is not on their side.

  17. I think the venerable imam should limit himself what sharia tell us when he is on the pulpits and leave the interpretation of constitution to the judiciary. I would also want the imam to tell which sura and ayat he is referring to when he said ” and the Quran teaches us that those who are doing that which is not good will not reduce anything from us muslims; all we need to do is the right thing ” Imam need to clarify this because to me though Ivan not verse in Quran but the little I know in Quran, several place where Allah mentioned “WE” he is referring to himself and not to anybody for he in many instances in the holy Quran use plural “WE” to refer to himself in stead of “I”. Please imam the the sura and the ayat if you have really taken that quotation from the Quran.
