Women call for civic education programmes on national media

Women leaders from around Brikama have noted that there should more civic education programmes, particularly on the civic and political rights of women, on the national media. The women leaders said there should be days and times on the national TV and radio for institutions like the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) and other organisations working on the empowerment of women to sensitise people, particularly women, about their civic and political rights in local language....

Banjul Mayor speaks

The mayor of Banjul Abdoulie Bah has spoken of his council's commitment to develop Banjul and improve the welfare of its populace. He was speaking on Tuesday at the National Assembly chambers in Banjul during a meeting with the National Assembly Select Committee on Lands and Regional Administration. Mayor Bah said he is working with development partners to provide the city with 520 street lights. He said the cost involved is huge but the council will only pay D2million for installation. He reiterated BCC's commitment to improve services in the area of waste management. The Banjul mayor stressed the need to utilise council's meager resources judiciously to enhance the socio economic standard of the people. He said the council is not over-staffed but rather lacks experienced personnel to deliver effectively. Mayor Bah spoke of the need for the local government act to be reviewed to redress the problems facing area councils. He said the Service Commission is dormant and urged the ministry of Lands and Regional Administration to look into it. ....

Gambian artist, Etu Ndow, 48, dies

Renowned Gambian artist, Babucarr Etu Ndow, died yesterday of suspected hypertension. He was 48. He is surivived by a wife and two children. Mr Ndow, a native of Bakau, runs the highly-rated Tunbung Art Village and Gallery in Tujereng, Kombo South. He was interred at the Bakau cemetery last evening.....
