On the dangerous security situation

Another weekend, another armed robbery. This is becoming a routine occurrence. Every other day, we wake up to news of an attack in one part of the country or another. Some of these armed robbery attacks are so brazen that one wonders what is really going on in this country.

The security situation is fragile, and the government of the day must get ahead of things and ensure that they are not spectators but actors. Recently, there have been a series of armed robberies, attacks on individuals, and so on and so forth.

Internal and external security is interconnected, and one affects the other. The intelligence gathering agency, the SIS should up their game and ensure that they have the relevant information always. They should then pass on to the police or the military any information they gather so that necessary action will be taken.

The attacks that took place in Farafenni in the North Bank Region, the one on the Bertil Harding Highway, the one in Brikama and so many other places show that the armed robbers are gaining more confidence daily and God knows where they will attack next.

All these incidents show that there is a lapse in our internal security and it should be looked at as a matter of urgency. No one is safe now. The business community is worried that their businesses may be attacked anytime, and their belongings taken away and there is nothing they can do about it.

The primary duty of a government is to protect its citizens and the government should do everything possible to ensure that the people of the nation are safe. It is also the duty of the government to protect the properties of its citizens. What is next? We have heard time and again, government functionaries talk about security sector reform. Whatever that means and entails, it should be expedited so that we will feel safe in our homes and communities.
