Gambians have called on the government to support National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) to raise more awareness on civic education.

These calls were made recently during the completion of a 6 days community sensitization outreach on democratic governance, civic rights and duties of citizens held at Kartong Village.

The NCCE, as persistent of its efforts to discharge its mandate, collaborated with TANGO with funding from UNDEF, targeting different communities in every region ended in Kartong Village to engage and sensitize them on their rights and responsibilities as citizens in a democratic country.

Officials of the NCCE took time to explain the role of citizens in a democratic state.

Speaking, Yusupha Bojang, program manager of NCCE, dilated on the objectives of the sensitization campaign and went further to thank their partners who made it possible.

He said the awareness is part of NCCE’s efforts towards cultivating a safe and cheerful democratic environment in the country to ensure sound governance, enhance public accountability, civic rights and increase the level of citizen participation, held under the theme: “consolidating good governance and human rights in The Gambia”.

Mustapha Manneh, the Beakayang Human Rights Hero 2020 Award winner, encouraged the introduction of civic education in the school curriculum in The Gambia.

He said the right of Kartong Village has been violated for 20 years.

For his part, Fa Musa Camara dilated on the importance of civic education in The Gambia.

He also called on the government to support the NCCE to be able to do their work effectively and to continue sensitizing the masses in order to prevent conflict in the country.

Ansumana Yabou, senior civic education officer of NCCE, said NCCE meetings or sensitizations give citizens knowledge about their rights as citizens of the country.
