The United Nations Resident Coordinator for The Gambia, Seraphine Wakana, on Monday promised more efforts to empower Gambian women to attain an equal society.

“The International Women’s Day is an important occasion to celebrate the incredible contribution of women to society and a reminder of the challenges they face to access quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities,” she said in a statement.

“Today and every day, we need to advocate for a more gender equal society and strengthen partnerships to support the rights of every woman and girl.”

International Women’s Day falls on Tuesday this year, with the theme of “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”

Wakana describes women as critical development players across the world as they continue to put homes, communities, nations and the world into the right shape through inspiring leadership.

“We must work together to eliminate gender stereotypes and gender-based violence. We must educate, promote positive role models, and raise awareness at all levels of decision — making to support the rights of women,” she added.
