63 young ‘armed robbers’ arrested

The Gambia Police Anti Crime Unit recently arrested 63 teenagers in the Greater Banjul Area for alleged armed robbery.
ASP Foday Conta of the police public relations department said the 63 teenagers allegedly stole flat TV screens, smart phones and sewing machines amongst other valuable materials.
According to ASP Conta, the suspects were alleged have a criminal network headed by a 21-year-old and that some of them have already served jail terms.
He said the suspects were armed with live bullets, knives and cutlasses amongst others.
Conta said the suspected criminals’ ring leader confessed to the police about some of their criminal activities and that his boys do whatever he orders them.

The leader also told the police that they take cannabis to do their operations.
ASP Conta said the ring leader also confessed that they once attempted to attack a police commissioner but they were unsuccessful.
“The gang leader also told the police that if they are on their operations, they would attempt to rob even President Barrow if he is on the streets by himself without escort,” ASP Conta told The Standard yesterday via telephone.

Meanwhile, ASP Foday Conta has also raised concern over the rate of teenage offenders, saying the best way to resolve the situation is to transform prisons into correction centers.
