ADRA Gambia donates food items to needy households

By Samsideen Ceesay Adventist Development and Relief Agency recently donated bags of rice, salt, sugar, beans and cooking oil to 250 households in diverse places in the country. According to organisers, the project aims to provide life-saving assistance through food distribution to vulnerable households affected by the recent political crisis. Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Pastor Karamba Jassey, ADRA board chair said ADRA Gambia is an NGO dedicated to help needy people who are affected in the recent political crisis in the Gambia. He noted that the distribution of the food stuff is done in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA). “Our move is geared towards ensuring that the affected households in the country are given relief because we are with the conviction that a ‘hungry man is an angry’. We also believe that the food items donated to these different communities will help to bring happiness to the affected families,” he said. Jassey further explained that the food support initiatives are desired to respond to the past political impasse which affected many Gambians. He said ADRA Gambia is investing in the dream of free hunger since its establishment in 1780, adding that this humanitarian charity is primarily engaged in poverty reduction. He said 75 households would benefit in Brikama, 25 in Banjul and 50 in KMC. Oumie Sissoho, NDMA representative said the political impasse was a difficult experience to most Gambians as it was the first time for many to experience such political uncertainties. “The impact of the impasse affected the economics of the country, in a manner cannot be overemphasized,” she stressed. Mary Mendy, project coordinator ADRA, thanked the donors from Holland as well as their colleagues at the National Disaster Management agency (NDMA).
