Labourers of the Bakoteh dumpsite have expressed optimism in the new mayor Talib Bensouda after decades of failed promises from his predecessors in Kanifing Municipality, calling for better salaries.
Ebou Sanyany, 49, father of seven, is the senior supervisor responsible for all the dumpsites within KM and has been working at the Bakoteh dumpsite for decades.

“I have been working here for the last three-decades, my family and I depend entirely on this dumpsite for our livelihood I am also appealing to the Kanifing Municipal Council to please increase our salaries because what we are earning monthly is not enough,” he stressed.
He urged the responsible authorities to provide them with station bulldozers to help level the ground and avoid high piles of waste.

The dumpsite continues to release dangerous fumes into the SOS Children’s Village as well as in the surrounding communities of Bakoteh, Manjai, Dippa Kunda, Sanchaba, Sukuta, London Corner and beyond.
Recognizing the lasting adverse impacts that hazardous materials can have on water and soil, there is real concern for food safety and the health of future generations within the area.
