The managing director of Nawec Baba Fatajo has disclosed that Barra and its surroundings will very soon enjoy 24-hour electricity supply under the NAWEC/SENELEC rural electrification agreement.
According to Fatajo, the power purchase agreement deal will connect cross-border points at Keur Ayib, Karang and Tamba Kunda.

“It will see SENELEC immediately supplying between three to 10 megawatts of electricity to NAWEC, with the possibility of expansion as the capacity of the network grows,” he said.
MD Fatajo over the week took time to visit the Karang/Amdalai border for the inspection of the cross-border electricity interconnection project. Shortly after inspecting the sites, the Nawec MD said work at both sides of the border is at an advanced stage.

He said the first phase of the project is already completed, “and both parties in the second have gone very far. We are optimistic that the second phase will finish very soon.”
“The electricity supply from SENELEC will go a long way to complementing NAWEC`s supply. With this initiative, most parts of rural Gambia are expected to enjoy access to 24-hour electricity before long. This is a significant milestone in the government’s rural electrification programme,” he said.
Already Farafeni and Jarra are enjoying almost uninterrupted power supply under the agreement.
