By Omar Bah

The National Assembly Member for Basse, Muhammed Magassy, said he will rally behind the NPP candidate after his bid for re-election was unsuccessful. Few weeks ago, the independent NAM told The Standard he was seeking re-election for a third term but his ambition was cut short after failing at the NPP Basse primaries.

When contacted for comments over the weekend after his failed bid, Magassy said: “I accepted and honoured the decision taken by the NPP to select Saikou Bah as the party’s  candidate in Basse. My role now is to give him my full support with no bitterness or ill will. And I want to put on record that this will not affect my support for the president or the NPP. In fact, as a coalition stakeholder, I am by default a founding father of the NPP.”

He added: “It is a matter of continuation. Before going to parliament, I was rendering public service. I taught for 12 years and I was promoted as education officer posted at the curriculum department. It was from that office that the people of Basse elected me as their National Assembly Member. So now that my term has finished, I will go back to the same office if possible or serve the country in another capacity depending on what the future holds.”

Gratitude

He thanked the people of Basse for “the privilege” of representing them at the National Assembly for the past 10 years. “I extend my profound gratitude to the people of Basse for the trust. It is thanks to them that I am the Magassy I am today. If it was not for them, the president would not have known me,” he said.
