CRC urged to include free housing scheme in new constitution

By Baba Sillah The people of Lower River Region have urged the Constitutional Review Commission to include free housing scheme in the drafting of the new constitution. At a meeting in Pakalinding village, natives turned out in their large numbers to participate in the review process, and sounded opinions as to how the new constitution should be drafted. They said it is the responsibility of every government to provide free housing scheme, healthcare and education to every citizen. They also talked on matters regarding the appointment of public officials as well as traditional rulers and the district tribunal. According to them matters relating to Sharia law should be handled by the Cadis who have knowledge in sharia. They all called for the enactment of a law that will see all political party leaders declare assets and source of fundings. The people of Jarra, also equipped that regional governors be elected by the people and not the president. They added that the governor of Central Bank, Auditor General and Chief Justice be appointed by special committee and not by the president. Issues regarding the protection of natural resources and the environment were also raised in order to help preserve both the environment and natural resources. Youth empowerment, women, children and the disabled were also discussed. Some of the participants expressed desire for parliamentary system of government and that the minimum qualification for eyeing presidency be grade twelve and the age limit be between 40 to 70 years. Speaking to The Standard on the sidelines on his thoughts of the tour, Commissioner Gaye Sowe described it as timely and significant.
