Darboe sparks debate on coalition MOU

A recent comment by UDP leader Ousainou Darboe that the Coalition MOU among the parties that came together to defeat Jammeh in last December’s presidential election was not signed by any member has stirred a heated debate among Gambians.

Darboe was speaking in an interview with a popular online radio programme called ‘for the people by the people.’
The UDP leader’s comments on the topic attracted widespread and tough reactions from both home and abroad, not least because the topic borders on whether President Barrow, who was elected as a candidate of the Coalition, should respect the 3-year term agreement said to be contained in the MOU.

However, when contacted for comments on the issue, Omar Amadou Jallow, OJ, the leader of the PPP and member of the coalition, said the debate on whether the MOU was signed is immaterial. “What is important is the agreement which has been signed by all parties. The MOU was just a way of getting about what we agreed on. Since what we have agreed has been achieved, which is to come together and defeat Jammeh, what then is the use of this debate on whether the MOU was signed or not?” OJ asked.
