Former paramount chief Alhaji Demba Sanyang died on Friday. His remains were interred at the Lamin Muslim cemetery on Saturday. He was believed to have been in his eighties.
Hundreds of people from across the country attended the funeral to pay their last respects to a man who was seen as “a thread that has sewn” many families and communities in Kombo and beyond for generations.
Demba Sanyang was born in Kiang Batelling and grew up in the Kombos. He worked in the civil service rising to the coveted position of Comptroller of the Household at State House.
He was appointed chief in 2005 by former President Jammeh who knew him when they both worked in Jawara’s State House. Sanyang was retired in 2017 reportedly on health grounds after Adama Barrow became president.
He was succeeded as Kombo north chief by Sukuta’s Momodou LK Bojang, a retired senior police officer.
