The Gambia Healthcare Matters (UK) Charity Organisation, recently donated at least 50 crutches, orthopaedic boots, two wheelchairs, and walkers to EFSTH and GISPD.
Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital received orthopaedic boots and two wheel chairs and the crutches went to the Global Initiative for the Support of People with Disabilities.
The donation according to the officials is meant to help better Gambia’s healthcare system for every individual.

The organisation’s representative, Ebrima Jallow said the organisation comprises a group of Gambians who came together with the aim of providing better health care services in the country.
He said: “For many years, our motherland has struggled to compete with its neighbouring countries to have in place a healthcare system that all can be proud of.

People who cannot afford a fee for their treatment in hospital die every day from treatable diseases or wounds”.
He said many people go to Senegal or other parts of the world for treatment due to lack of proper medical equipment or medication in the country.

“We want the dwellers in The Gambia to boast of a healthcare system that has the needed facilities, equipment, medication and human resources that it yearns for a better healthcare”, he added.
He said if everyone joins efforts, the important goal of having a better health care service will soon be a reality.
He assured his organisation’s commitment in supporting the NGO’s and the health sector by providing more equipment.

The public relations officer of the hospital, Modou Lamin Jammeh, said they are impressed that the organisation is coming on board to support the hospital, adding that the number of patients who are in need of wheelchairs and orthopaedic boots is on the increase.

He added: “This donated items will go a long way towards helping the hospital because communicable diseases are rising and most of our patients are suffering from orthopedic and diabetes.”
Assistant coordinator, Alpha Jallow said the donation will help them because the NGO is in all regions. He appealed to the donors for more support and collaboration because what they are getting is very low.

The Gambia Healthcare Matters (UK) Charity Organisation was founded by Gambians in the UK in February 2018 with the aim of supporting healthcare service providers in the country to help effect change for a better healthcare.
