Gambia to host major international scientific conference

The Gambia will host the 58th annual international scientific conference expected to gather about 1000 to 1200 surgeons drawn from ECOWAS member countries, Gabon, Congo and others from Central Africa.
Dr. Melville O. George, the Chairman of the local organizing committee of the West Africa College of Surgeons revealed this information to journalists in a press briefing at the WHO office, Kotu yesterday.
The Conference will start from 25 February to 2 March.

The forum which will be held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel with the aim of implementation of surgery for West Africa, health care financing, innovations for training and development of human resources health in West Africa is also expected to be graced by President Adama Barrow.
George also stated that the surgeons who will be attending the event are members of the West African College of Surgeons. “The college stretches across 22 countries in Africa. There will also be surgeons from other international colleges in other sub regional parts of the continent, the United Kingdom, United States of America and parts of Asia.”

Dr. George said the college and colleague surgeons from Europe, America and parts of Asia will volunteer their time to conduct free surgery to people with difficult cases which could not be treated locally, thus they will be targeting five patients in a day.
The conference is organized by the West African College of Surgeons in partnership with WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, AU, WAHO and UNFPA.
