The Gambia Teachers Union (GTU) on Tuesday evening urged striking teachers to return to their schools after government paid their Covid-19 allowances.

In a press release signed by GTU secretary general Marie Antoinette Corr, the union announced that it received feedback from the members that teachers in all affected regions have now been paid their full Covid allowances.

The statement added: “In case of any omission, teachers are advised to draw the attention of their respective regional chairpersons or directly to the office of the general secretary for redress. Teachers are hereby requested to return to work with immediate effect and continue doing their best.”

Ms Corr said the union is renewing its commitment and resolve in safeguarding its principles and commitment to pupils, students and teachers.

“We are thanking government and the general membership for their cooperation and support throughout this specific journey,” the release ended.

The union has been criticised for calling for the strike with parents contending that pupils and students have lost enough learning hours during this Covid period.
