The Independent Electoral Commission has donated twelve Evolis printers to the Gambia Police Force for use in the production of driving licenses across the country.

The gesture, which included other items such as twelve cartons of printer ribbons, printer cleaners in addition to two Evolis printers, was received by the director of finance GPF Edward T Sambou on behalf of the Inspector General of Police at the IEC Head Office last week.

The speedy issuance of driving licenses has been a perennial challenge to the police especially for the licensing department. The officials said the donation will address the huge burden and the rapid availability of driving licenses.

“During elections the police supports us and its now our time to support back. We hope that these equipment will be put to very good use in order to make driving licenses available to all Gambians,” IEC vice chair Malleh J Sallah, said at the handing over.

“I think this should be an example to other government institutions when they need each other in this new Gambia they are required to help each other,” he added.
He said the commission will also endeavor to support the police with the software and needed capacity to help them in the use and application of the equipment.

Edward T Sambou said the donation came at the right time as it will help improve standards at the police.
While hailing the electoral commission for what he described as a magnanimous gesture, Sambou said the move will elevate the work of the police so that by 2018, the backlog of issuance of driving licenses will be a thing of the past.
