IEC registers over 900, 000 voters

The Independent Electoral Commission has announced that 987, 484 voters have been registered at the end of the general registration of voters on Sunday.

This figure is about 100, 000 more compared to the 886, 578 registered in 2011.

Out of the 987, 484 registered 559, 996 are females while 427, 488 are males.

The number of votes registered by regions is led by Brikama with 360, 825 out of which 203, 263 are females and 157, 562 males, followed by Kanifing – 187, 632 of which 102, 056 are females and 85, 576 males; In Basse 125, 832 are registered of which 77, 613 are females and 48, 219 males.  

The remaining regions are as follows: Banjul – 21, 445, out of which 11, 244 are females and 10, 201 males, Kerewan – 109, 934 – of which 62, 172 females and 47, 762 males, Mansakonko – 57, 832 of which 31, 870 females and 25, 962 males and finally Janjanbureh – 123, 984 of which 71,778 are females and 52, 206 males.

The IEC further stated that the provisional lists of voters shall be displayed at the various registration centres where they were compiled for ten days which shall be announced in due course.

“The display of the lists of voters shall be followed by the establishment of the revising courts to decide on the objections and appeals on provisional lists,” IEC said in a statement.

The electoral commission expressed gratitude to the government, political parties, development partners, CSOs, media houses and Gambians for their support and participation in the successful completion of the general registration of voters.
