The minister of information and communication infrastructure, Demba Ali Jawo has spoken for the first time since the recent Ecowas judgment ordering the Gambia government pay six million dalasi to four journalists namely Fatu Camara, Alhagy Jobe, Fatou Jaw Manneh and Lamin Fatty

Speaking during a live telephone interview on GRTS Good Morning Gambia, minister Jawo described the Ecowas court judgment as landmark, pointing out government through the ministry of justice is going to meet and study the judgment. When asked to shed more light on whether it was binding for the present government to honour the judgement considering the fact that the incident happened during the Jammeh era, Jawo said it was obligatory on the state to pay, whether it happened in the past is immaterial.

The minister of information added that as soon as the government completes its study on the judgement, they will try to reach out to the concerned journalists with a view to discussing with them on the modalities of payment.

It could be recalled that the four Gambian journalists jointly filed a criminal law suit against the government of the Gambia for violation of their human rights, torture and being subjected to degrading treatment whilst under detention.
