The newly elected National Assembly member for the Old Yundum Constituency Abdoulie Ceesay has expressed gratitude to his people for bestowing their trust and confidence in him after he emerged victorious among the eight contesting candidates in last week’s poll.

Speaking to The Standard at his residence, Ceesay said he is very much aware of the challenges ahead but he will effectively endeavor to perform his responsibilities as expected.
During the campaign many of the communities were talking about so many issues in their various villages and Ceesay: “I assured them that effective representation is one thing that I am going to stand for and as a parliamentarian working for the communities, I will have to bring them together and we will set up a committee that is going to look into the affairs of all these villages.”

The National Assembly over the years has been described as rubberstamp but Ceesay said he envisages a parliament that will be guided by national interest with integrity and responsibility to work for a better Gambia.

“We would not want to go back to what happened in previous years in the Gambia,” he said.
He also challenged fellow parliamentarians to reconcile their people in the best interest of all regardless of their political affiliation. “We have a big task because the constituencies are divided and as a NAM responsible of making laws for your people, one thing you need to do is to go back and reconcile them in a way that is in the interest of everybody,” he added.

Hon Ceesay also assured the losing candidates of his willingness to work with them for the development of the constituency. “We may be divided by parties but at the end of the day, we are all individuals working for the interest of the society.”
