The national security adviser, Rtd Colonel Momodou Badgie, has revealed that the security sector reform will not only focus on the military but all other units of the security services.
Speaking at a recent press conference at State House, Badgie said the reforms are to ensure an effective and accountable security sector under democratic control with full respect for human rights.
Badgie said the downsizing will be across the board and will not only affect the military as reported and that it is necessitated by the need to cut government spending.
“We have to understand that the country is donor-driven and therefore most of our programmes and projects are driven by the donors and the grants we receive and since we are not an island we would want to align ourselves with the best practices internationally,” he said.

He said the assessment made by his team has revealed other issues not limited to malpractices in the security sector.
“The assessment discovered a seemingly bloated security sector compare to what probably the economy can afford. So there are lot of issues and lot of factors that we are still looking into to have the clear picture that will enable us to come to a right decision.”
