‘Theatre is an effective tool for human rights education in Gambia'

Ebunjan Performing Arts Association will implement a two-year project (2021-2023) on issues pertaining to the rights of the child in The Gambia.

Funded by the Netherlands government, the project objective is to provide playwriting and directing skills to twelve graduates from the Department of English, School of Arts and Sciences, University of The Gambia, who are currently

teachers at the upper and lower basic schools in the Greater Banjul Area.

The training will also underscore the fact that human rights culture demands

responsible behaviour and activities.

At the end of the training session, teachers will motivate and encourage students to participate in narrating factual events on human rights violations within their communities. Twelve short plays will be written, edited, rehearsed, and presented at a Human Rights Festival in November 2022.

The National Human Rights Commission has been invited as partners to provide vital information on current human rights violations with negative impact on children. This partnership reflects their mission statement: “Our mission requires us to inform the public of their human rights…” 

Dr Cherno Omar Barry, former executive secretary at the National Human Rights Commission and Ms Grace Chapman, lecturer and director of theatre -in-education programmes; Department of English, School of Arts and Sciences, University of The Gambia are consultants in this challenging project.

Ebunjan Performing Arts Association is thrilled to execute this project for it underscores its raison d’etre: promoting theatre as a tool for social development in The Gambia.
