The University of The Gambia School of Journalism and Digital Media on Wednesday commemorated founders’ day under the theme ‘Reshaping Journalism in The Gambia’.

In his welcoming remark, the president, University of The Gambia Journalism Students Association, Malick Mboob, said: “Today, we celebrate the founding of The School of Journalism and Digital Media. Three years ago, this great school we proudly called the cubicle of knowledge was commissioned. Three years on, students of the school have made recognizable impact in the university despite the small size of the school.”
He added: “We stand here to celebrate this great occasion because, after three years, as a school we have a reason to celebrate.

True, the school is yet to graduate any student (well when we stand here this time next year, we will be flanked by alumni of the school), but the pace at which the school is moving and the spirit of unionism among students must be celebrated.”

Commenting further, the JSA president appealed to the university administration and all other concerned authorities to support the school so that it can stand on a solid footing to compete at regional level.
“We can do it, and we will do it regardless of the scantiness of resources at our disposal.
“I must recognize the great efforts of our dean, Nana Grey-Johnson. We are aware of his contribution to the establishment of the school”.

Sulayman Njie, deputizing the minister of Information, said media is a tool that empowers the society.
“In the new dispensation we will reshape the practices of journalism in the Gambia. One of the objectives of the government is to reconcile the people of the Gambia. We will not see the journalists as enemies but partners in development,” he said.
