The faculty and staff association of the University of The Gambia has suspended its sit-down strike.

The UTG staff went on strike over poor working environment and conditions.

But in a statement released after an emergency meeting, the association said the staff members have decided to end the sit-down strike and give chance to students to sit for their exams.

These decision came after seven hours of engagement by stakeholders from the University of The Gambia, Moherst, governing council, Office of the President, student union, and National Assembly Select Committee on Education.

According to the association, some of their demands were met including the dissolution of the interim governing council within three weeks and replacing it with substantive new members with a chairman, in line with the requirements of the Tertiary and Higher Education Act 2016.

The meeting also agreed for a new joint research council and senate committee in line with the bye-laws of the University of The Gambia 1999 while Moherst will lift the ban on the UTG from running their engineering programmes by 19 July 2021.
