The representative of the director general of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr Alhagie Bakary Drammeh , said the West Coast Region continues to be highly vulnerable especially to the trafficking of cannabis.
He said the region accounts for the bulk of cannabis seized annually by the agency.
Mr Drammeh made these remarks on Wednesday during a drug sensitisation forum targeting regional authorities held at the Governor’s office in Brikama, West Coast Region.

“In the first quarter of 2018, the agency registered unprecedented seizures of over half a ton of cannabis sativa within in the West Coast Region alone. We all know this is as a result of many contributing factors like the porosity of our borders and proximity of the region to the southern Senegalese region of Casamance,” Drammeh said.

According to him, these drugs were destined for supply to “our families, relatives and any of our families could be a victim. We must therefore cooperate and partner in addressing this ill before it aggravates to a level where it will consume us all.”

He said a message of warning has been also sent to heads of household or those responsible for the management of properties who host drug dealers or knowingly permit drug related activities to take place within their premises.

“This act is strongly condemned in the drug control act. Therefore anyone found wanting in this menace will be dealt with according to the dictates of law,” he warned.
