Writers’ Association honours Sabally as St. Augustine’s wins debate championship

Prolific Writers Association organized an inter-school Debate and Poetry Competition from July 17, to 18, 2018 at The Gambia Senior Secondary School Hall. Dubbed “Banjul to the Future” the inter-schools debate and poetry completion attracted 11 Schools in the categories of poetry and debate. The poetry competition was won by Adama Mboge of Gambia Senior Secondary School.

The Debate category saw Gambia Senior Secondary, St. Augustine’s, Essau Secondary and Kairaba Senior lock horns in the finals. The motion for the debate centered on whether homosexuality should b legalized; after a heated completion St. Augustine’s Senior Secondary School was declared winner with Gibril Njie of the same school crowned Best Debater. Essau Senior Secondary School came out second in the Debate contest.
The championship was held in Honour of Gambian author and motivational speaker Momodou Sabally (aka The Gambia’s Pen) with the theme “Celebrating The Gambia’s Pen”.

Speaking at the closing ceremony Sabally advised the students to take their education seriously and to develop the culture of reading. He also urged them to keep up the good spirit of initiating programmes and events geared towards national development since nation building is the duty of every citizen regardless of whether they are serving in government.
Organized by the Prolific Writers’ Association, “BANJUL TO THE FUTURE” is an INTER-SCHOOL DEBATE AND POETRY CHAMPIONSHIP which is geared towards enhancing the speaking skills and styles of students in argument and submission of ideas.
