The International Criminal Court's credibility has come under sharp focus across Africa in recent times. The first global criminal court, it is governed by the Rome Statute – a treaty that was adopted in July 1998 by 120 countries to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community.
