According to the results released from the West Africa Senior School Examinations, this year’s performance is dismal.
It is reported that out of 13, 335 students who sat to this year’s exam, only about 475 got five credits including English Language and Math which will qualify them for entrance into the university.
This translates into only about 3.7 or so percent which is less than what it was last year and the year before that. This means that the performance has been deteriorating in the past few years.
Certainly, this shows that there are serious problems in our education system and it is time that we seek solutions, and fast. When one studies the results, one notices that they are plummeting fast.
The factors responsible for this dismal performance are many and varied. This is not the time to apportion blame but it is obvious that from government, to WAEC, parents, teachers and students all have a role in this.
It is clear therefore that we need a multifaceted solution which has to be approached holistically.
