GAMBIAN OLYMPIANS READY FOR TOKYO

The toast of the Gambia’s 2020 0lympic team Gina Bass, the women’s 200 metres African champion will be joined by three other Gambians to seek medals when the games open in Tokyo later this month.

Bass is the only athlete to gain qualification on the track and she is the current holder of the national record in the 100 and 200 metres. She will compete for The Gambia in those events at the Tokyo Games.

Another Gambian, Ebrima Camara will compete in athletics after earning a wild card entry (a wild card is an athlete or team that has not qualified for a competition but is allowed to take part, at the organisers’ discretion).

The Gambia will also compete in judo with Judoka Fye Njie going again to bid for a medal at the Olympics. Njie won a silver medal at the 2015 All African Games in Brazzaville and qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio based upon the continental quota for Africa. He is based in Finland.

The fourth Gambian Olympian this year is Ebrima Sorrie Buaro, who will seek for gold in swimming after earning a wild card.

The rest of the team include officials and coaches and they are:  Chef de mission Anthony Tabaal, GNOC president Dodou Joof, sports minister Bakary Badjie, GNOC secretary general Aboulie Jallow, team leader Muhammed Janneh, press attaché  Cherno Bobb, athletics coach Alain Small, administrative personnel Ousman Wadda, technical officer Yoro Njie, judo coach Robert  Perovuo, Olymic attaché Bintou Jallow and medical officer Omar Jagne

Delayed from 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tokyo games begin on July 23, with the organisers determined they will go on, even with a reduced number of spectators or possibly none at all.
