GFF on round two fixtures and unpaid cash prizes

There were initial fears that the league could be affected when action starts in Brazil but last night federation first vice president, Buba Janneh dismissed the notion that the football league should be over before then, or will be affected by the World Cup.

“I think looking at the time difference between Brazil and The Gambia there is hardly any effect the World Cup will have on our football programmes here,” he told The Standard yesterday. He also said considering the international programmes of the team, for example, the Under-20, alongside the FA Cup, it is inevitable that some spaces would have to be created for them in the fixtures.

On the impending matters dealing with appeals, Janneh said the organising committee would sit over the Bakau United appeal against Real today, having now got a response from Real, after which it will be the appeal committee’s job to rule on it.

On the thorny issues of money owed to clubs in the form of cash prizes, Janneh said that issue is among four key components that the GFF has listed as a priority in its financial programme. “Since we took over we undertook to tackle such issues as settling all areas between the federation and its employees and their dues, outside debtors and of course the monies owed to clubs who won past cups  and are yet to be paid cash prizes.

“Our approach is to set up a mode of payment for all these arrears by installment. That way we shall get over these. But since we took over we have paid all cash prizes of competitions held during our time,” he said.
