The president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) Dodou Joof, will not contest next month’s election, official sources confirmed to The Standard.

Mr Joof who is also the president of the Gambia Athletics Association (GAA) became president of the GNOC five years ago.

The GNOC secretary general Abdoulie Jallow said Joof, a former top Gambian athletics team captain and police commander had made his intention to quit known to all. ”The GNOC elective congress will take place on November 27th and the nomination for all positions on the board closes today Friday,” Mr Jallow added.

The GNOC is among the most prestigious sports body second only to football but with far more connections with world sports. The body is also responsible for The Gambia’s participation in the Commonwealth Games. With nominations closing today, it is not yet known  who is vying for what position. However it is widely expected that Mr Joof’s immediate juniors in the board may all be interested in running for positions. Meanwhile, a group led by Combined Forces and  Power Lifting Association president Lamin King Colley is also flexing its muscle to take  key positions on the board.
