Among the early arrivals are students from schools in URR, LRR and of course NBR, the host region. Our correspondent yesterday described the atmosphere in the border town as buoyant and festive with all major streets filled with strangers trooping in groups while petty traders replenish stocks in expectation of massive sales during the weekend long sports jamboree.

Meanwhile, a strong team of officials from the Gambia Athletics Association, GAA, led by president, Dodou Joof, has also arrived and are busy checking the arrangements on the track.

There was no championship last year because of repair works at the stadium but officials decided to move it to the provinces this time as current works at the stadium are  still not completed.

The president of the Gambia Senior Secondary Schools Sports Association, Principal Martin Gomez of Saint Augustine’s also spoke to The Standard from Farafenni yesterday and reported that his men have been on the ground looking at accommodation and other logistics. ”We are doing everything possible to the best of our means to make everyone comfortable,” he said.

On the chances of Saints in their title defence, Martin said they are confident, ”Gambia Senior Secondary School are here and they are our biggest rivals and even Bottrop, among others are strong but my priority now is to ensure that every one is looked after and things put in proper shape”.
