Tribute to Yulisa Amadu Maddy aka Pat Maddy, angry Sierra Leone playwright, novelist and actor (1936-2014)

Sierra Leone's most celebrated writer Yulisa Amadu Maddy aka Pat Maddy died on 16 March 2014 at the age of 77. With his demise, Sierra Leone has lost its equivalent of Soyinka, Brecht and Pope; an angry and recalcitrant writer, whose writings have been described as rebellious, sharp edged and liberating. Pat's 1973 novel No Past, No Present, No Future about a trio of deracinated African youth émigrés to USA, won numerous accolades and critical acclaim. For the trenchant yet veiled criticism in this work of neo-colonialism and especially the Siaka Stevens regime, Pat suffered a stint in jail in Freetown in the 1970s before he fled into exile….
