A press release issued yesterday by the group stated that the 2014 award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Lagos, Nigeria on 7 December, with a focus on getting one million young Africans involved in the fight against Ebola, leveraging on Africa’s best resource, its people. As part of the activities for this year’s awards, a fundraising campaign was launched in November, and all funds will be channelled through legitimate e and active organisations on the forefront of the fight against Ebola.
“The Ebola Free Gambia group, recognised for its tremendous efforts in raising awareness about Ebola through various advocacy platforms, has also been invited to the award ceremony in Lagos, to support the cause and share experiences from the sensitisation campaigns embarked upon thus far. A six-member delegation is expected to represent the group at the award ceremony this December, and preparations are ongoing for a successful participation at this auspicious gathering.
“Ebola Free Gambia partners and supporters have taken a proactive role in contributing to this trip, through donations in various forms, to ensure the expenses are covered and The Gambia is well-represented at this global platform. This is especially important as we work together to promote an Ebola-free country, in the midst of the adverse economic and social effects of the Ebola outbreak in the West African region,” ” the release stated.
The Ebola Free Gambia initiative is a partnership between Fong4Life and Global Shapers Community Banjul Hub. Its mission is to educate the public about Ebola, with the aim of protecting The Gambia.
“We believe that mass public education and effective sensitisation is critical in the fight against the spread of Ebola. The group welcomes all the support it can get from individuals and corporate bodies to further strengthen the impact of our work, for the greater good of our country, The Gambia,” the statement concluded.
