Karim Wade suspended until Monday

Karim Wade will return to the courthouse on Monday for continuation of proceedings of the 117 billion CFA francs illicit enrichment trial.

Opened on July 31, the high profile trial has suffered from several adjournments as prosecution and defence counsel engage in legal tug of war over procedural issues.

Meanwhile, lawyers for Bibo Bourgi quoted as the front man of Karim Wade, who is also standing trial have angrily reacted to the decision of the special prosecutor Alioune Ndao, to deny their client’s request for a postponement of the trial for a few weeks.  “It is inhumane and inexplicable. He is appropriating himself the power of life and death over our client, by refusing him to seek treatment at his cardiologist in Europe,” they said.

They However, recalled the case of Sheikh Béthio charged with accessory to murder in the case of Médinatoul Salam, who was sick and was given ”preferential treatment”. The same treatment, they claimed, is denied Bourgi Bibo. “This policy of one law for one person and another law for another person does not honor our judicial system,” the lawyers said.

Meanwhile, another of Karim Wade’s close associates, Abdoulaye Balde, mayor of Ziguinchor, was granted bail after appearing before the court of illicit enrichment on Tuesday.
