Writing on his Facebook page yesterday, the young Gambian opposition leader based in Europe, stated: “I’d like to make this plain: I am against rape of any description particularly child rape. Those of us who are parents would be even more passionate about this. I support, fully, legislation that imposes penal sanction of a basic minimum of twenty years to life. I also support legislation against child pornography with a minimum of ten years penal sanction. Girls and women are not chattels. If a man cannot restrain his base carnal instincts, he constitutes a grave danger to society and ought to be kept away. Rapists belong in jail. This is one piece of legislation that GMC and the government shares.”

Speaking at the launching of First Lady Zineb Jammeh’s Operation Save The Children initiative at the Kairaba Beach Hotel over the weekend, President Jammeh declared: “We will now make it a capital punishment for raping a child… Protecting a child goes beyond just saving him or her from violence.  Rape of whatever form will not be tolerated by my government. The increase in baby dumping in the country has become rampant and stringent measures will be taken against the menace. Baby dumpers have no right to dump their babies and if they do, they will spend the rest of their lives in jail.”
