Standard played heroics to destabilise the formidable Alex Sanchaba who buckled under immense pressure to concede a penalty that Saikou Manneh calmly converted to put Standard ahead in the second half.
Despite a rapid rallying of troops, Alex Sanchaba could not break Standard’s fortress who held their ground buoyed by vocal fans who turned out in their hundreds.
As they push hungrily for an equaliser, Sanchaba dropped their guard on their back which was left opened and vulnerable inviting Standard FC’s Yankuba Jammeh alias Rooney to make good of one of the many chances by slotting a scalding shot which left a flabbergasted Sanchaba goalkeeper stranded.
Commenting on the victory from his base in Belgium, founder and former coach, Alieu ‘Mourinho’ Jabang said: “To say I am happy will be an understatement. I am overwhelmed with joy and pride. It’s just an indication that the change of name is not just for the sake of it but ascertains our seriousness as Standard newspaper is a serious news medium. This is a strong promise every future matches will be better than yesterday”. The nawettan continues.
