Typical of his strong opposition to the continuous presence of foreign West African troops, especially the Senegalese contingent stationed at his native Foni, the newly declared flag bearer of the No-To-Alliance Movement and Member of Foni Kansala Almamy Gibba, has vowed to end what he calls Senegal’s colonisation of The Gambia if elected in December.
He was speaking just after been appointed flagbearer of the movement loyal to former president Yahya Jammeh during a rally at Buffer Zone Saturday.
Gibba said his government would restore full territorial sovereignty on its first day in office, describing the current security arrangement as a humiliation to The Gambia.
“No Gambian voted for Senegalese soldiers to police us in our own country,” he lamented.
He said a free Gambia must control its own army, its borders, and its resources without external interference, and called on all Gambians home and abroad who believe in true independence to join his political movement.
Hon Gibba also promised easy access to ID cards and other national documents, which he said must no longer bear tribal references.
He said a No To Alliance government will reintroduce the ‘Eat what you grow and Grow what you eat’ doctrine to drive hunger away.
He concluded with the promise of free healthcare for all citizens.
Observers say in framing The Gambia as a “colony” of Senegal, Gibba is tapping into deep-seated anti-Senegal sentiments and sovereignty concerns that resonate strongly with his base in the border communities of Foni where relations with Senegalese forces have been bad.
