A confident President Adama Barrow has urged opposition political groups and their supporters to join his National People’s Party (NPP)-led alliance, instead of wasting their resources if they believe that political participation should be driven by service to the country rather than the pursuit of positions.
He made the appeal at State House yesterday as the political movement WAREF, led by Modoulamin Bah, formally joined the NPP-led alliance.
Addressing the gathering, Barrow called on Gambians across political divide to put national development above personal and political interests.
The president said those joining his political camp should focus on delivering basic services, including water, electricity, roads, schools and hospitals.
The president also teased the opposition to save their monies from wastage and contribute them to national development.
He also called on supporters to demonstrate their strength during the NPP’s nomination scheduled for November 10. He jokingly warned that there could be a shortage of vehicles on the day, urging supporters without cars to walk to the nomination ground.
For his part, WAREF leader Modoulamin Bah said the movement had not abandoned its vision but had chosen a different political path to pursue its development goals.
He said WAREF was joining the alliance with its ideas, projects and expertise, adding that its commitment to empowering Gambians remained unchanged.
Bah said the movement would measure its contribution through improvements in people’s lives, particularly in employment, women’s businesses, education and community development. “We are not entering politics to occupy positions. We enter it to transform and help develop our country,” he said.
