Court remands teacher accused of murder

Mr Ebrima Sanyang, a 38-year-old Gambian teacher, was alleged to have murdered Alhagie Jobarteh also a teacher at Abuko Upper Basic School. 

According to the bill of indictment filed by the police prosecutors, Ebrima killed Alhagie by stabbing him with a knife several times on his chest and body in October this year at the Abuko Upper Basic School.

The accused, Mr Sanyang did not take his plea as the police prosecutor, Sgt Saidykhan applied under section 62 of the Criminal Procedure Code for the matter to be transferred to the high court which has the jurisdiction to try the case.

“Your worship, the prosecution is applying for this matter to be transferred to the high court which has the jurisdiction and authority to hear the case. We further submit that the accused be remanded in custody pending the hearing of the matter before the high court,” he said.  

After listening to prosecutor’s request, the adjudicating magistrate granted the application and ordered the accused to be remanded in custody pending the hearing of the matter before the high court.
