Displaying remarkable grit and tactical discipline, judoka Faye Njie fought his way through a tough shoulder injury to capture a bronze medal for the Gambia at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday.
Competing in the men’s -73 kg division at the SEC Centre, Njie faced an early test against England’s Ethan Nairne in a fiercely contested bout. Although halted in the semi-finals by Nairne, Njie demonstrated exemplary composure to transition into the repechage rounds.
In the bronze medal match, Njie squared off against Scotland’s Oliver Short. Utilising his active posture and mastery of *tachi-waza* (standing techniques), Njie pressed the advantage into the golden score period. Executing a decisive throw under intense pressure, he sealed the victory over Short, securing a hard-fought podium finish and another proud milestone in Gambian sporting history. When Gambian flag was raised in the Arena, the travelling Gambian supporters erupted into celebration.
