Sarjo Ceesay, the regional chairman of the governing National People’s Party NPP in Central River Region South has condemned the ongoing spate of tribal politics and personality attacks in the national political discourse warning that tribalism has no space in “our politics” and poses a threat to the country’s long-standing peace.
In an interview with The Standard, Ceesay did not even spare his own party colleague. “The recent “tribal comments” by Mamut Ceesay, NPP regional youth coordinator in the constituency against UNITE’s leader Talib Bensouda, was not right but such comments are not reflective of the NPP’s all-inclusive agenda,” Ceesay said.
According to Ceesay, Bensouda’s citizenship is unquestionable as not just him but all his parents are Gambians.
”I want to urge all politicians and citizens to be mindful of hate speech, tribalism or personality politics. Every time it happens, it creates national debate and irritates everyone,” he said.
He attributed the removal of former president Jammeh to the tribal bigotry he made against the Mandinka’s saying that galvanised people to come together irrespective of tribe to vote him out.
