President Barrow on Saturday told the people of Kanifing, the largest municipality and the seat of his rising political rival Talib Bensouda, that it was time for them to have a serious conversation about their own political direction and development of the area.
Bensouda is the mayor of the KM, and leader of the opposition Unite Movement for Change UNITE and Coalition 2026.
Though the president avoided naming Bensouda, he warned a large audience at Serekunda School that they must learn from their mistake and start electing people who are serious and committed to working for them and addressing their aspirations.
“Since the presidential election of 2016, you have chosen the opposition at every ballot but now you must assess what if any, meaningful development have they brought to you,” the president said.
He described the elected opposition leaders of the KM as people who are only good at driving expensive vehicles, wearing designer clothes and making wild pronouncements and empty talk.
”What have they done for you?. All what have been done in Serekunda was implemented by my government,” the president told the gathering.
He wondered how people from an urban area like KM could allow themselves to be fooled by people who cannot fool even people from rural areas like URR.
Major cleaning project
After taking his political opponents at the Council to the cleaners for not doing much, the president announced that the people of KM would however be saved from their present predicament over waste collection.
”By the end of this month my government will sign a major waste management project that would put an end to this whole mess and transform the KM to a clean place,” the president said.
He promised that the project will collect all waste to a new landfill away from residential areas, adding that when that operation starts, the notorious Bakoteh dumpsite would be closed. He said people would even be able to sell their waste for recycling.
