WAFU ZONE A U20: GAMBIA BEAT GUINEA AND ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS
The Young Scorpions made an emphatic statement at the Ouezzin Coulibaly Stadium in Bamako last night claiming a 2-1 victory in the final match day of Group A, qualifying for the semi-finals of the Wafu Zone A tournament.
The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Ghana.
The Gambia’s victory over Guinea was secured in two stages.
Following a free kick from Francis Gomez, Agibou Dibba opened the scoring with a header—his first goal of the tournament—giving his side a 1-0 lead at the break.
Gomez then turned from provider to goal scorer in the 52nd minute, doubling the advantage. The Man of the Match had further opportunities to extend the lead, though he was unable to convert.
At the other end, Guinea narrowed the deficit in the final moments through Mohamed Camara, resulting to a tense finish to the match.
Guinea qualifies despite defeat Despite this setback, the Syli Junior (Guinea U20s) have secured their qualification. With 6 points earned from 1-0 victories over both Mali and Liberia—Guinea finishes second in the group behind The Gambia, who lead with seven points, and advances to the semi-finals. The Gambia finished strongly, following a 0-0 draw against Liberia with a 1-0 win over Mali. The Young Scorpions will face the runner-up from Group B, while Guinea will take on the winner of Group B this Sunday, October 25, at the Mamadou Konaté Stadium.
The two teams that make it to the final will automatically qualify for the Caf Under-20 championship.
