Barrow promises 24-hour power supply after $169m solar deal

President Adama Barrow has promised Gambians uninterrupted electricity within 12 months following the signing of a US$169 million solar power project agreement for the second phase of the Soma Solar Park.

He made this disclosure during an NPP grand alliance event on Wednesday, where he said the project would increase electricity generation and help address the country’s ongoing power crisis. He also promised to reduce electricity costs once a more reliable supply is achieved.

“I signed a solar contract today for 148 megawatts, which is bigger than what The Gambia needs in electricity,” Barrow said.

The president disclosed that the company had strong financial backing.

“The company I signed it with has a bank which is valued at nine billion US dollars. So you don’t ask that bank if they have money,” Barrow said.

He described the agreement as a major investment in the country’s electricity sector and expressed confidence that it would bring an end to power interruptions.

“It will not stop there. If the light is on, I will also reduce the cost of electricity. I’ve signed that today,” he said.

Electricity supply has remained a major concern for households and businesses in The Gambia, with power cuts affecting daily activities and increasing pressure on the country’s energy sector.

Barrow’s announcement comes as his government faces public expectations to improve electricity generation, ensure a reliable supply and make power more affordable. The president did not mention his promise to stabilise power by the end of this month.
