Former GAMSU president Omar Joof dies

Omar Joof, a former president of the Gambia Students Union (GAMSU) and a prominent diaspora voice during the struggle against Yahya Jammeh’s rule, has died in Canada.

Joof, popularly known as Mountbatten and a native of Bakoteh, passed away recently, prompting an outpouring of grief among family members and former colleagues. He was remembered as an active participant in the diaspora opposition to the Jammeh regime.

Before his years abroad, Joof worked as a radio presenter with the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), later joined the Gambia Commercial Bank, and also served as a teacher. His student leadership role at GAMSU and subsequent activism overseas made him a recognisable figure among Gambians who opposed Jammeh’s long tenure.
