GOV’T PUBLISHES LG COMMISSION REPORT, WHITE PAPER

The Standard has been reliably informed that the government has published the report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Conduct of all Local Government Councils and for Connected Matters together with the Government White Paper setting out its decisions on the Commission’s findings and recommendations.

Our source said the documents have been uploaded on the websites of the Ministries of Justice and Local Government as of yesterday night.

The Commission, established in February 2023 by a Presidential Decree under Section 200 of the Constitution, and Legal Notice No. 7 of 2023 was mandated to inquire into, investigate and report on the administration, governance, financial management and use of public resources by the eight Local Government Councils.

Following receipt of the Commission’s Report, the Government established a multi-sectoral Committee to study the Report and prepare a draft White Paper.

According to our sources, the Cabinet has approved the Report and the draft White Paper which details the government’s position on each of the Commission’s recommendations.

Our sources added that the White Paper sets “out the measures Government will take to strengthen accountability, financial discipline and good governance in local government administration, including administrative, legal and institutional reforms, and follow-up action on specific adverse findings by the appropriate authorities in accordance with the law.”
