A dozen Gambian soldiers were on Friday charged with treason and related charges in a court martial at Yundum Barracks which remanded them pending trial.
The soldiers, appearing before a court for the first time since they were arrested at various times between July and November, and though the indictment was not read in court, the military had said the accused among other things allegedly used a WhatsApp platform to do unethical acts.
The 12 soldiers were led by Capt. Yahya Biray Jammeh, a relative and former aide to former President Yahya Jammeh.
The case resumes on 27 November when the accused will enter their pleas. They are meanwhile transferred to the Mile Two prisons after the court upheld a request by the prosecution arguing that detention facilities at the military camps are not adequate and that the rights of the accused for access to family and legal representatives will be respected.
