The West Coast Zonal Football Committee has initiated a number of water projects at football venues at towns around the region to improve sanitation and hygiene at the grounds.
Each year the regional zonal committee organises a competition, West Coast Zonal Football Championship, competed among towns in the region with fixtures spread across the region. The matches are hugely popular attracting massive crowds.
The committee has decided to plough back proceeds from the competition by way of projects at the various grounds in many towns in the region.
Recently, the zone successfully undertook projects that provided solar-powered boreholes to improve player welfare, hygiene and community access to water at The Brufut Strasser football field and Foñi Bintang Karanai district football field.
These facilities will benefit players, spectators and the community in general in those towns. “The initiative aims to improve player welfare, spectator comfort, safety and hygiene while making community football grounds more functional and inclusive,” a zonal committee official said.
Procedure
All recognised zones in region were invited to submit project proposals, which were assessed for demonstrated need, technical suitability, affordability, readiness, community value and arrangements for maintaining completed facilities.
Brufut and Foñi were selected because their projects were considered practical and achievable within the available time and budget.
Larger pavilion proposals for Gunjur and Sukuta and a perimetre fence for Lamin were deferred because of their cost, although the committee intends to raise more money and seek support from the partners to implement as soon as feasible.
