Ghana captain Gideon Mensah has vowed that the Black Stars will bounce back from their disappointing 4-2 defeat to The Gambia and give supporters something to celebrate in their remaining 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, suffering their second consecutive defeat in Group C.
Mensah admitted that Ghana failed to produce the performance required after making a strong start and believes luck also played a part in the outcome.
“I think we all saw the game; we started very well with two goals. And I think it is one of those games where we have to accept that luck was not on our side,” Mensah said.
The captain also accepted responsibility for the result and said the players must be prepared to face the criticism that comes with representing the national team.
“We probably didn’t perform as we were supposed to on the field and me, as captain today, I also take responsibility for everything that happened on the field,” he added.
Mensah called on the team to protect the players and the Black Stars as they regroup from the difficult start to the qualifying camp.
We have to protect the boys, protect the national team. Like the coach said, we can take the criticism and everything that is supposed to come to us,” he said.
Despite the back-to-back defeats, Mensah believes Ghana still have an opportunity to turn their campaign around and restore confidence among supporters.
“At the end of the day, we are the players and we are supposed to accept whatever comes from the people we play for. We have the chance to do it again and to make people happy again,” Mensah said.
Ghana are currently without a point from their opening two Group C matches and will face Somalia in a double-header in their next qualifiers.
